  • Housed in 26 historic buildings of the former Naval Training Center, ARTS DISTRICT Liberty Station is the new creative center of San Diego. Here you’ll find public art, music groups, dance companies, art galleries and museums, along with delicious food and beer. There’s a cultural organization around every corner on this walking tour.

We’ll start Luce Court surrounded by the Sybil Stockdale Rose Garden, a colorful spot in front of the Dick Laub NTC Command Center. From there we’ll go see a roof top work of art, which also gives us a great overview of the former Navy base.

Next we’ll check out some of the interesting architecture of the area, including the 1941 North Chapel and former training buildings. Then we’ll head over to the former Luce Auditorium, where the likes of Nat King Cole, Bob Hope, Jack Benny and Tommy Dorsey performed. If available we’ll stand on the very stage where these legendary entertainers stood. We’ll continue on to visit Dance Place where several dance companies are based. Perhaps we’ll see a future prima ballerina!

Our next stop will be the former Commanding Officer’s garden where we’ll enjoy one of the best views of downtown San Diego. Then we’ll take a selfie in front of the Liberty Station postcard mural before visiting a former barracks where artists working in a variety of media show their creations. Artists available vary from day to day, but all have interesting stories to tell about their art.

We’ll stroll through the arched walkways of the former Camp John Paul Jones and take in more of the ever-changing public art in the district as we make our way to Liberty Public Market. There we’ll find more art and artists along with some artistic food & drink! We’ll get a sample of some local craft beer and one of our favorite snacks before you have time to explore the massive food hall. Perhaps you’ll stay for dinner and drinks, or your guide can provide additional recommendations on how to enjoy the afternoon at Liberty Station.
